La Coruna, Spain

The seas were very rough last night and we heard today that the ship had switched course to avoid the worst of the weather making our docking time one hour later in the morning. We didn't mind as it gave us time to have a leisurely breakfast in the dining room.
Our relaxing shore excursion took us to the town of Betanzos, a spot on the pilgrimage route through Spain. Scallop shells on buildings and built into the roads showed the pilgrims the route. The town's buildings were mainly white in colour giving the town a different feeling from the others we have visited. Our guide took us on a walking tour where we visited the Igrexa de San Francisco built in the 14th century, and she pointed out many buildings of note. The picturesque town is very hilly so the inhabitants would have to be extremely fit. We had a wander around ourselves for a half hour before boarding the bus to the Garden of Pazo de Marinan. This delightful garden once was part of a wealthy family's estate but is now owned by the government. It is most known for its ancient trees - chestnuts and camellias. We learned how to open a chestnut. The gardens are also located in an important ornithological area but I would have needed my scope to locate birds in the salt marshes, and more time to locate the birds hiding in the foliage. From there, we had a scenic drive along the coast, saw Franco's summer home, admired the many beaches before returning to a bus tour of La Coruna. I am afraid that my eyes wouldn't stay open for the whole trip as the movement of the bus rocked me to sleep.
We returned just in time for trivia where we were joined by another passenger who helped us get 5 of the 15 available points. Norma is resting up for dinner. We are skipping the cocktail party at six this evening in favour of a nap. We will join our fellow STs for dinner.
