This area was an optical illusion. There was quite a slope in the area of the pillars but due to the different slants of the pillars (they were not perpendicular) and the differing heights of the tile work at the bottom of the pillars, you were fooled into thinking the floor was not sloped downwards. Underneath was a reservoir.
